Ducal Palace
The Ducal Palace of Bragança in Guimarães was ordered built in the 15th Century by Afonso, (illegitimate son of king John I and Inês Pires Esteves), 1st Duke of the House of Bragança and 8th Count of Barcelos, at the time of his second marriage with Constance of Noronha (daughter of Afonso, Count of Gijón and Noronha) and Isabel, Lady of Viseu.
Essentially inhabited during the 15th Century, during the following centuries one saw a progressive abandonment and a consequent ruin, motivated by political and economical factors, which was aggravated until the 20th Century.
Between 1937 and 1959 an ample and complex reconstruction intervention was carried out based on a project under the responsibility of the architect Rogério de Azevedo. In parallel, the current effects were acquired, made up of works of art essentially dating from the 17th and 18th Centuries.
